Unpredictability of Healthcare Cost and Online Price Tools

Recently NPR’s Shots blog did a great piece on the difficulty patient’s face while trying to “price shop” for medical procedures. In the piece a couple from Pennsylvania are having several costly procedures done this year and are likely to meet their deductible of $8000. The only issue is  that they are trying to slowly reach it by being choosy about where they have procedures. They turn to their insurance company’s (UHC) online price estimator but find that the real cost are dramatically different. Check it out below.
